When I have a problem getting it to start on, I use a little grease. I am not sure if that makes it harder to get a seal after or not.

1) Heat: Either use a heat gun or put the end in boiling water for a bit
2) Lube: Avoid petroleum based as it can break down the rubber but synthetic grease, silicone grease/spray, tire mounting lube or just plain old dish soap mixed with water which is my go-to as there are never any side effects with any materials.

BP38, I assume you are speaking of the water pump and radiator bottom outlets being 1 5/8. Ignore those figures. Use some shellac on the hoses and mount to the elbow. Then, using the shellac "(Indian Head" type) slip the lower portion hose on the bottom radiator outlet and then the upper portion on to the water pump outlet. Position the screw heads where you can tighten them. Piece o' cake. And easy to do. No swearing needed. Charlie
