Has anyone ever replaced their stock rear wheel bearings with a double-shielded sealed one ? I My understanding is that this "upgrade" would take the worry out of the original inner and outer felt/leather seals to keep the grease in the bearing and differential fluid out.
I believe the stock bearing now is a New Departure #1208.

I have talked to some guys that have used the double sealed rear axle bearings and they said that the double sealed bearings worked fine. With the double sealed bearings it is recommended that a vent be installed on top of the axle tube however.

I had a n axle break and I changed out both sides when I replaced my axle....Easily done and no consequences. I did, however, place a vent on the top of my axle tube...

How thick is that axle tube ? Wondering if a cordless 18v right angle drill, using slow speed, cutting oil, step drilling with cobalt or titanium bits, with steady pressure would get me through it rather than dropping the axle and using something heavier.

I tried another option I saw posted.
I took out the top right bolt and drilled a 1/8" hole thru it. Put the bolt back in and put a slightly spread cotter pin in the hole.
The car is a long way from being ready to drive, however, I think it should work fine and I didn't have to drill through the housing.

As long as it didn't throw any fluid out, it sounds like it would achieve the same thing. Must have been fun drilling through the bolt.

I used a right angle drill motor with good standard bits....No cutting oil but did use some tape to help gather the cuttings...Axle tube is not that hard....
