When my car sits In the garage for awhile, I have transmission oil leaking out of It. Is that normal for the powerglides to do when they are not used for awhile. chevy

Learn to live with it. The 1953/54 are the worst ones to leak when they had sat for a long time.

agree with ray. when we drove our 54 vette to the nationals cross-country, it didn't puke a drop of atf as it was being used every day. let the puppy sit for more than 2 days and it'll puke out an ounce or so. have torn the powerglide apart twice and replaced numerous pieces as recommended by an oldtimer who'd rebuilt them every day in the 50's. never did get it to stop puking after sitting. mike

Completely normal. When the cars sits for a period of time the torque converter drains down and overfills the transmission sump. just see how overfull the fluid level will be before starting the engine. With engine running the converter will refill in a few minutes. If run for only a minute the fluid will puke out of the filler tube. The leakage on the floor is from the kick-down lever shaft.Normally its above the fluid level. When the overfull condition exsists the fluid is above the lever shaft and the seal can't hold it back. The 1050-52's don't have this problem because they did not have a kick-down feature.

Thanks for the transmission Information. I wont worry about It leaking anymore while the car sits In the garage. Now If I could only get the car to stop using gasoline when I drive It. Anyone have any Ideas?. Oh ya, Just leave It parked In the garage and collect cob webs and dust. chevy

With the gas milage that truck gets, I think I will park It and let the cob webs and dust collect on It. A friend of mine was on highway 101 last week In california and one station had gas for three dollars and thirty cents a gallon. Yikes :( chevy

Classic Chevy makes an anti-burp valve that keeps the transmission fluid from running back into the pan (this only helps if the filler tube is pushing fluid up and out)... easy to install fixes about 50% of the dripping problems... due to radiator setting higher than trans and fluid going back to trans during long periods of setting...

Do you meam the oil in the cooler draining back??Can't be more tha a pint of ATF in there???....My Corvair PG is air cooled and it drains back and overfills the PG-but those don't BURP...They have manners.

I sucked 3 qts out of the '57 last fall.Pulled the dip stick yeaterday (engine not started) and its about a quart above the full mark...but no leaking on the floor.

Another interesting 1957 item in the new CCI catalog.A anti-slosh valve for the filler neck on 1957's.Prevents the gas from spilling out around the gas cap during fast acceleration.Looks like it should work.Fits into the fliier hose and costs $39.99...less than the price of a tank of gas.

The new '57 I had as well as my present one has this problem-(they all did)-stains the tail light and bumper and causes the tail light lens to break eventually.

It states that it can also be used in a 1956 with slight filler neck modifications.

I thought you were supposed to check the level with the engine running as the torque converter holds qite a bit of fluid when running and the stick would show overfull after not running for a while.

It is correct to check the level with hot fluid and engine running...My example was to illustrate the level before starting engine with the fluid in the top half of the converter drained down into the sump. The top half holds at least 3 qts.
