I will be the first to admit that automotive electrical doesn't always make a lot of sense to me. I am a lot better at residential electrical problems.
Measuring the generator output from the rear terminal of the cut-out to the ground I got about 30 volts. Way too much as I understand it. So I followed the instructions, moving the third brush toward the engine and I still get about 30 volts.
Am I doing something wrong or is this an indication of a generator problem or what?
Just for giggles, the ammeter is not functioning at this time so I can't tell you what that shows.

If you are getting 30 volts out of your 6 volt generator then you are probably doing something wrong when testing. Also, at 30 volts you would burn out all of your lights and the electrical gauges.

JD, I understand what you are saying and as far as I can tell nothing has burned out. It seems highly unlikely that I could be getting this output. I have checked the meter and it is right on in other applications. What I really need to know is if this generator, which sat around unused for more than 40 years, needs to be rebuilt/refurbished. I know someone who advertises in the G&D who does such work.
I have read just about every VCCA chat regarding generators. How do I tell if servicing would be wise?

Oh yes, it is a 943J and quite likely original to the vehicle.

The 943J generator is the correct generator for 1931.

If the generator hasn't been gone through in years, the chances are good that it will need a total restoration, and it is advisable to do so.

Not trying to sound like I'm questioning you but do you have your meter set to DC voltage? It is an easily made mistake. Test it on your battery and then on a modern 12vbattery. Now possibly you've done this and I'm all full of water but thought I'd mention it.

Yes it is on DC, not on "doubler" and I get a little over 6 v directly on the battery.

Generally speaking neither water nor beer hangs around long enough to fill me up.

I'm wondering if the voltage reads high because there is no load on the generator. My 29-30 repair manual says that a loose connection between the generator and the battery will cause the generator voltage to rise and overload the coil. (This was from the trouble shooting section on why the coil could be leaking wax). Have you checked the voltage with a moderate load?

I think that you might need to follow JYD's advice....
