My 31 194 engine runs very well but when it is under strain or I am trying to accelerate I get a chatter that ends as soon as I can let up on the gas. Is that normal for this engine.

Not normal. Possible loose rod or main bearings or pistons.

Try pulling the spark control knob to retard the timing. It may just be the timing is advanced too far and you are getting pinging. An easy check before digging in deep.

I tried retarding a bit and it did help some. As near as I can tell the motor was rebuilt about 40,000 miles ago, if the records I have are complete. I think I will work on the side of being safe and at minimum drop the pan and do some checking. I appreciate everyone's input. This forum is priceless.

Retarding the timing wil REDUCE loose bearing noise AND PISTON SLAP.
