I've removed the gas tank from our 1933 Master Coupe to check the sending unit on top of the tank. Now that the tank is removed I checked the dash gauge and it reads 32 ohms. So I know that I need to order a 30 ohm unit. But the gauge is still doing the same thing it did before I started. When I turn the key to the on position the gauge needle immediately jumps to the full mark (even with the tank out of the car). My sending unit was totally rusted and non-workable when I removed it from the tank. Does anyone have any ideas why the gauge always reads full when turning the key on even with the tank not in the car.
Thanks,
Dennis

Try grounding it. My gauge reads full whenever I disconnect the chassis ground.

If the tank sending unit is disconnected from the gas gauge, the gas gauge will read full.

OK, I tried grounding the wire that connects to the sending unit terminal and when I turn on the ignition key the gauge reads empty. When I disconnect that wire from the ground the needle jumps to full. The sending unit itself is completely rusted solid. So it must have rusted in the full position (I guess). It will be interesting to see how it works with a new sending unit in it. I ordered one from the Filling Station today.
Thanks everyone,
Dennis

Not neccessarily in the full position but leaving no connection to ground.

With the wire to the sending unit disconnected and grounded the gas gauge should read empty. With the wire to the sending unit disconnected and not grounded the gas gauge should read full.

Your gas gauge is working correctly.

Look at the position of the float on the sending unit and then you can tell if the sending unit is stuck on full or not.

Remember to mount the float towards the side of the car otherwise the gauge will rock excessively after stopping the car. These rock back and forth a lot as there are no baffles in the tank.

Terrill,
I have already reinstalled the gas tank. It now always reads a little under half full (Except with the key off. Then it reads empty). I don't remember there being a way to install the float in different ways. I think after I use the gas in the tank I will remove it again and take another look. Maybe I will take some pictures of it and see what I can do about it.
Thanks for the suggestion Terrill.
I do appreciate all the help this forum has given me with this car. It is a learning experience.

When I installed my float assembly in the gas tank the screws dictated where I was able to attach the top to the tank. I also had to play around with the rod length that the float is attached to. The float was hitting the side of the tank. I ended up dropping my tank a couple of times because of this. Difficult to see in the tank with assembly on. Requires trial and error.

Oldchevy36,
Right now I'm trying to figure out a rattle in the clutch pedal. After I have fixed that I will get back to work on the gas tank sending unit. Thanks for the heads up. Dennis

Gauge shows full under all conditions. There is a break in the line between the dash unit and the tank unit.
