How Can you tell if my engine has mechanical or hydraulics lifters with out tearing the side panel off? I have a 1950 216 Chevy engine that supposed to come out of a car with a powerglide transmission. The serial number starts H A M 224----
Any ideas?

Seems you can push down on the pushrods on a hydrallic lifter and not (of course) on a mechanical. Just use a long bar or stought screwdriver and prize down on a rocker arm, just enough to see if it will move or not. Be careful. Best is to see if the engine serial number is for a hydrallic engine or not. if someone else doesn't give you better information soon, I will look it up in my book. Charlie

HAM is a 1950 passenger car 216 engine so it will have solid lifters. In 1950 the 216 solid lifter cars had the tall push rod cover. The pushrod cover came right up to meet the rocker arm cover. The 235 Power Glide engine had the low push rod cover, only 5 1/2" tall.
Being a standard transmission engine you should see a solid brass pilot bearing in the back of the crankshaft.

mike, The block for a 1950-52 with powerglide is; 3835692. The number is cast on the passenger side of the block. The head (all w/235) is; 3835909. The number is cast on top of the head. (if these number don't match up then you probably have a 216.) (Above from a 1929-57 Chevrolet Parts Book) i hope this helps, Charlie

The casting number for a 1950 235 block is (was) 3692703 and the 216 is (was) 3835497. The numbers in the above post are for 1952 replacement blocks that has the motor mount bracket bolt holes on the sides. The 1950 blocks were discontinued in 1952 and the 1952 blocks sold as replacement for 1950 and 1951 models.

Being that the HAA and HAM are 216" mechanical lifter Flint or Tonawanda produced engines, what are the codes for the 235" hydraulic lifter equipped PowerGlide engines? I don't see any reference to the these early PowerGlide passenger 235's.

1950 would be HAD or HAQ 1951 would be JAD or JAQ 1952 would begin with K
The first letter is for the year, middle letter for passenger car and last letter for plant. The D for Flint and the Q for Tonawanda. 1953 - different
