I just removed my engine and transmission from my '25 sedan. (need to have engine rebuilt) I separated them today and so I was wondering if there are any precautions I need to take as I remove the clutch assembly. I've never seen a pressure plate like these old ones. BTW does anyone know of a rebuild shop in southern New England that does babbitt bearings? Thanks for any help you can provide.

Hi Steve,
If your clutch pressure plate is the same as in my '28, it is a piece of cake to take off.
On mine, I took two of the bolts out (opposite each other) and put in two longer bolts, say around 3 inches long. Then, you can take out the rest of the bolts and slide the clutch pressure plate mechanism away from the engine on the two longer bolts.
Then, you can safely support the mechanism and take out the two long bolts.
While you have things apart, I suggest that you switch to the newer sealed bearing throw out bearing. It is good piece of mind when driving because you do not have to worry any longer about the graphite bearing getting overheated.
Also, I suggest checking the wear of the pivot pin in the throw out bearing actuating arm. Now is the time to do any repairs while it is in the open.

I agree with Dean. I recall that the bridges on which the three arms operate were severely worn and were replaced. Not sure what the proper terms are. The trunions on the clutch lever need to be closely inspected and replaced if at all worn.One of mine fell out and that was a major problem. The"top hat" likewise should be replaced if not perfect. All these things are easy when dismantled.

For pouring bearings,I've used the Babbit Pot near Saratoga, NY. He's very good. Phone 518-747-4277. He might advertise in Hemmings.
