Are hand signals still legal in all 50 states?

i just got back from driving the 41 coupe for a round trip of about 12 miles to get myself a haircut, i had to give many hand signals owing to the coupe not having turn signals. I was just wondering if the hand signals were legal in other states.

How about those little flippers that used to be on the early VWs? Still Legal over there?

problem is that very few people know what the 3 hand signals actually mean. Used to be you had to answer that when doing test for license.

Just may think your a punk with arm out window.....lmao , waiting to flash a straight arm with 1 finger extended upward ???

I use hand signals here in California when I take my '27 or '28 truck out for a spin.

I use hand signals every time I drive the '38. While I don't know this as a fact I'm assuming they are not only legal in all 50 but required for vehicles without turn signals (bicycles, old Chevys laugh ) or with damaged turn signals. I always keep a close eye on my mirror during the process.

I have seen many motorcycle riders giving normal hand signals (no not the single finger salute) here in Texas. Don't know the legality question but assume it is still okay.

Legal here in Alberta.

They work great on a bike as most people know it's an arm signal but can't remember which signal is which so they simply back off and give you space which is perfect.

Here in NC, they think you are waving at them. They wave back and then swerve into your lane while trying to take a photo of your car with their cell phone while driving.

let me streatch this a bit more.

i now remember I saw a set of turnsigns whilst at Charlotte last weekend that were displayed for a model A. There were small indicators for the fromt and rear that appeared very small. i can't remember what the switch looked like. Anyone seen those?

Thanks for the replies so far.

i'm not against adding a set of TS to the coupe but most I see are not very attractive and from what I've read a B--ch to install. dance2

easy peasy, swap in a newer column with tilt and telescoping, 4 way flashers, plus the signals switch all built in.

You can get a brand new column with all those features from IDIDIT in Michigan or head to a wreckers or swap meet and find one there.

I even use hand signals sometimes in my NEWEST cars. Especially when slowing down for a turning vehicle ahead of me or some other confusion. (and I'll often times move slightly to the right side of the lane so that they have a clear view of my hand/arm)

I'm sure that half of them don't know what it is intended to convey, but it does get their attention momentarily away from their cell phone - so in that regards, they are effective.
