I have a new inner cable to fit. It seems to be NOS and very dry & dusty. I think I need to soak it for a few days before trying to fit it.
Question. What oil would be best for this? It is loosely coiled so I can immerse it for a few days.

I have always used motor oil on mine with good results.

Some guys use grease. If grease is used it should not be applied to the top 1/3 of the cable so it does not get into the speedometer head.

If there is old original hardened grease present the oil will also soften it.

The shop I used for my cable recommended Lubriplate #105. Put it on the cable and then wipe it down. What remains in the grooves should give plenty of lubrication and will not run.
