Hi
Is there anyone who repairs old speedos? My 1930 came from Uruguay and the speedo is calibrated in km, but it is also wildly in accurate.
I would like to get it converted to mph and re calibrated.
On this point, I assume that the takeoff from the gearbox is standard and the calibration is in the instrument?

Yes there is someone that rebuilds them and I will send you a PM with contact info. I am not sure about the conversion process. Curious as to why you want MPH being that you are in the UK as I thought that would be KPH.

I was shocked when I drove in UK and the speed/distance were posted in MPH. Always thought they were more fully metric than we are in Canada.

It would be cool to keep the original and maybe find a US MPH speedo that you could install.

If your speedometer works ok but is off by a consistent percentage, it could be the differential gears have been changed and the transmission speedo drive gears were not matched. If the speeds are random or bouncing needle, it's likely maintenance/repair of just the speedometer.

Hi Guys,
Does anyone know if the 29 and 30 speedos are the same? I am hoping to swap my mph speedo for a km unit. The 29 is oval.

Tim, I am visiting in the UK at the moment and quite suprised that they are not fully metric yet. Although it seems only distances are in miles.
In South Africa we started changing in 1961 and have been fully metric for nearly 40 years. I started school in 58 and fortunately was taught the imperial system as well.

Chris

1929-32 speedometers are the same. The 1929 bezel is different.

I am amazed that everyone is surprised that UK uses mph.
I am thinking of buying a US speedo, but what about the connection to the gearbox?
Is the difference between km & mph in the instrument or is it in the takeoff from the gearbox?
Would appreciate some comments

The difference between MPH and KPH is strictly the numbers painted on the face of the gauge. Both are linear.

Government handed out KPH stickers when Canada first converted from MPH to KPH. You simply did the math and stuck a KPH sticker on the corresponding MPH on the dash.

The Odometer gearing (in the speedometer assy) will be different as 1 Mile = 1.61 KM so a shop could tweak that or you could do the math.

It doesn't take much to remember the common speeds:
60MPH = 96KPH
40MPH = 64KPH
25MPH = 40KPH
1MPH = 1.61KPH
