I know the VCCA isn't loaded with mind-readers but I'll ask anyhow at the risk of potentially getting plenty of adverse comments...IF I put the original type voltage regulator for 1938 (2 terminals up/ 2 down...5814) in my car (original 38-216) what problems could I expect? For talking purposes say it has 50K miles on it...Billu38

If it is in good operating condition you will have no problems. The biggest problem will be finding one that is in proper operating condition. As a general rule Delco voltage regulators of any type seldom lasted over 50,000 miles or 5 years.

From my experiance in the Chevrolet parts department selling new regulators. That is just an average. Some went 10 years and some much less.

Anything that can be done to beef them up or lighten their load so they last longer?

I've had fleeting thoughts of building solid state guts for these but I really like the originality so I guess just stock spares...

The 5814 voltage regulator on my 39 sedan is still the factory original, and I have not touched it in 30 years of my part of the long family ownership
