What type of fluid is used to refill the reservoir ?
Is there brand/type that is recommended ??

They were filled with brake fluid.
If it is completely dry such as the parts all replaced some guys use hydraulic jack oil.....but it will not mix with brake fluid (which removes paint)

If you can completely clean the system, the folks I bought my top cylinders from recommended using automatic transmission fluid.

1940 and 1941 had a vacuum operated top.
1942 had an eletric.
1946 and up had hydraulic with an eletric pump.
