Two things:

a. I noticed that a 65 Mustang went for 75k. How in the world did that happen?

b. A 48 Mercury Convertible went for only 31K. Makes me think the 48 Chevrolet I mentioned in a recent post that the owner was looking for 52k was way overpriced.

C. Question: Are our old Chevrolets hitting a plateau and starting to shrink in value?

Moved to General Disucssions.

And, Charlie, the answer is "Yes". I have been saying this for the past 4 or 5 years. In my opinion , 30's Chevs peaked about 2013/2015 and 40's Chevs are now coming to their peak value.

Of course this isn't the case if a seller finds a buyer with more money than sense.

Demographics is the likely cause.

Nearly 1/3 of the population of the USA and Canada are Baby Boomers. The ages in this group extend from about 52ish to 74ish or so and these are the most likely people to own these cars. As this group continues to age, sadly more of these cars will be passed on or sold off. The demand is dropping off (fewer boomers to buy) and the supply is increasing (oldest boomers cars being sold off which are the oldest models).

We will notice this pattern everywhere as this 1/3 of the population starts changing their lifestyle entering retirement and then old age. They will sell off and decrease demand on large houses, cottages, collector items/cars and will increase demand on things like condos, healthcare and medications.

People tend to also want the cars from their youth. The late boomers or early Generation X's (myself) can now finally afford some toys and are drawn to the cars or the 60's and 70's running up the values of these at the same time there is less interest in the older cars.

Lord only knows why I posted in a totally improper forum.

Thanks BB for transfering it for me.

It seems to me that there are enough old folks that there should still be a significant market for the 39s and 40s and 50 cars. It is becoming more clear every day that my thinking needs adjustment. It won't happen.

Well, the other "disruptor" that has finally arrived are ELECTRIC cars. They have the potential to render nearly ALL of our vintage cars obsolete. Vintage is one thing... being Vintage AND Obsolete is another.

With State gas taxes dropping, most States are looking towards a per-mile fee for all road use. Can you image having to install a GPS into your vintage car so that the State can track it's usage??

It's gonna feel weird. Please just shoot me now. bigl

Sad but true! I told my oldest son that when I was done with my '33 coupe (that I had searched so hard for original parts to complete) someone would probably throw out the original engine etc. and turn it into a hot rod. His response was "not as long as I am alive" unfortunately, he is only 20 years younger than I am.

Electric cars with no driver. Well at least at 90 years old you still may be able to ride alone. That is if you can operate the latest smart phone.

Uncle Ed,

It's time to sell the 33 and any other old Chevrolets you have. Sell the acres of corn too. With Solon and the cricket farmess, it won't be long before we'll be zipping around in driverless devices and eating bugs for lunch. Cows and pigs will be gone. They like corn.

Right now, the only cars that bring a good fair price are the rare ones and the custom or muscle variaty. If you want to keep the 33 just tow it to the outside of the kitchen door, cut the top out of it, fill it with compost and grow tomatoes. The missus will hug you. Yep. luv2

To make her even more joyous, you could sell it and buy her a big diamond solitaire ring. (Do not tell her this part of this post.)

You're welcome,

Charlie computer

BTW: Merely tell your sone that you've changed your mind about leaving him the car. Take some of the money it brings (don't forget the diamond) say a grand and tell him to evenly split it among the his other siblings. (Only way to keep peace.) Agrin

On my short list of Chevy's at BJ the maroon 41 Cabriolet sold Tuesday for $47,500. See it here; http://www.barrett-jackson.com/Events/Event/Details/1941-CHEVROLET-SPECIAL-DELUXE--200603
And the blue 35 master coupe brought $33,000. http://www.barrett-jackson.com/Even...OLET-MASTER-DELUXE-BUSINESS-COUPE-199941

That's about what you would spent on parts and materials if you restored them yourself.
The only consolation is the Fords sold for less... 35 cabriolet, $44,000 http://www.barrett-jackson.com/Events/Event/Details/1935-FORD-DELUXE-CONVERTIBLE-200490
And this 1940 coupe for $37,400; http://www.barrett-jackson.com/Events/Event/Details/1940-FORD-BUSINESS-COUPE-200021

All this just shows there aren't enough of us old guy's left who like these old cars.

One thing folks don't realize is that for every big dollar car rolling across the auction stage on TV, are reasonably priced nice drivers. A friend went down there last year and bought a nice driver/ almost show quality 70 Duster 340 muscle car for 20K.

These cars don't make it on prime time TV. So if you're looking for an affordable driver, don't let the TV cars scare you off. There are good deals to be had if you do your homework at B.J. and Mecum.

No experience here but I think I would agree.

Sounds reasonable and good advice.

Any of you Baby boomers looking to off-load your '32-'38 convertibles can call me, and I'll give them a good home. Even come pick them up. I'm willing to pay what you paid in the '70's!!! Agrin
