Is there any way to find out how many 31 Phaeton's are left out of the 852 that were built? Thanks for any help.

Sal,
No way to tell as far as I am aware. There are plenty of South American (and maybe a few from other countries) '31 Phaetons that were brought to the USA in the past 40 years. Those were not included in the domestic production numbers.

that Mario Caplan exported all kinds of open cars assembled in GM Buenos Aries ARGENTINA assembly plant to the USA and many other countries. n He did this all thru the 70's and the 80's.

Prior to 1939 all GM cars built in Argentina were right hand drive.

All the body panel stampings were USA. These are different from the GM Holden Australia bodies.

Can we tell by the body number where it was manufactured?
I have a car which arrived in the middle East in 1936 from USA.

1931 Phaetons produced in the USA only had a car number plate nailed to the passenger side wooden main sill or front seat riser. They didn't have a Fisher Body plate attached to the firewall as the bodies were not made by Fisher Body Div. of GM.

If you have the original car number plate the assembly plant and approximate date of manufacture can be calculated. If it has the original engine/head/transmission the approximate date can be calculated but assembly plant will be unknown.

yes if the car was made in the usa the factory where it was assembled will be in the open car floor plate number. It will be the first number.

for instance my 35 phaeton is 23503.....

2 is for TARRYTOWN NY
35 IS YEAR
03 IS THE MONTH IT WAS PRODUCED march
the rest are the serial number.

It should read 2EC03 if it's the real serial number plate for that 1935 Standard...Joe

thanks for the answers.
I have the numbers of the head and transmission and the engine.
I think all were produced in December 1930. Looks like the engine is original. I have the plate, but I cannot see anything.
Is it possible to find the plate number from the parts numbers?

If you have the floor plate that was nailed to the seat riser or the floor on passenger side, the number is stamped into it. lightly scuff the plate with 1500---2000 grit water paper. That should expose it. Otherwise you may have to lightly spray ONLY over the number stamped area with black lacquer spray bomb.

leave that dry for a day and try the water paper and a magnifying glass over the area, hopefully will bring it up

Please check your PM's... (Private Messages).

It is a blinking envelope at the top of your page.

Having done a lose count, I know of approximately 30 or so 1931 Phaetons in existence.

Bill, I have opened that PM box and the flashing sign does not go away. I tried deleting the cookies but they just come right back when I religious in. I must not be doing something correct?

As a fellow '31 Phaeton owner I am interested in the thread. Have put nearly 2000 miles on ours since we bought it. On a few VCCA tours there have been nearly identical twin '31 Phaetons. One right and other left drive.

If you read the PM and then refresh the page the flashing envelope will go away.
