I'm installing rebuilt tranny and having trouble with mount, can get tranny seated to bellhousing but can't seem to get mount in, if I install mount first I can't get tranny in. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you all.

41D, If the bell housing is attached to the engine and the transmission is attached to t he bell housing and the transmission mount is in place the merely jack ut the transmission until it will slide over the crossmember. Then after everything is alinged as best you can put in the mount bolts. You must sliode the engine and all attachments back. The mount has slots so that the alignment doesn't have to be exact. This should not be a problem. Where are you running out of space? Do you have a service manual? Charlie

I don't know if the 41 is similar but I can confirm that on my 38 Master, if the mount is installed backwards, the transmission will not fit in and mate with the motor. Ask me how I know!

Are you installing from above or underneath the car?

Yes, have manual, if mount is in place cannot get shaft into pilot bearing, if tran shaft is in pilot bearing cannot get mount in place. Are you saying to loosen engine/bellhoising mounts and jack engine enough to install tran mounts?

41D The transmission should be in place connected to the engine. I don't understand the pilot bearing issue. The pilot bearing has a hole in it for the drive gear to go in. As to by yourself, I installed mine with the engine and transmission in place. I jacked up one wheel and turned it until the u-joint engaged the drive shaft. Piece o' cake. Everything fit like a glove. (Not OJs) Good luck, Charlie BTW: 41 owners, as a group, tend to have a much higher IQ than the 37-40 and 42-48ers, especially the 47/48 Fleetliners. I would expect them to go haywire on the simplest little problem but not 41ers. Please think this problem through and stop embarrassing us 41ers. Thanks. BTW2: Re IQ. Most 47/48ers can play the hell out of a banjo. Go figure. See Deliverance.

If the 41 is similar to the 38, there are two reaction mounts on the bell housing. When the transmission is removed, the weight from the rear of the engine is taken up by the reaction mounts and they will crush somewhat. Since the transmission mount is designed to take this weight, there will not be enough space to get the mount in. The solution is to use a jack underneath the back of the bell housing to raise the motor slightly while the mount or transmission is installed. I like to loosen off the top bolts on the reaction mounts a bit when I do this.

From my first post to you: "merely jack ut {up} the transmission" 41D, Ouch! I told you to jack the thing (transmission which would work just as well-it being attached to the engine via the bell housing) up to start with. Again, look at my first post to you. You're welcome to my advice anytime and I will not take your fairly accurate comment regarding my mental status too seriously. Have a great day and I hope your project comes along nicely. Best wishes, Charlie

Now that everyone is in agreement, AND that the problem is solved, it's time to close and LOCK this thread. Reminder to read THIS.
