I am hesitant to use it. Does the crank escape from confinement once the engine starts? Is it going to whorl around in the front of the car untill it flys to the side of the garage? What is the safe way to use this?

Turn the crank handle with your palm up and open. Do not grip the handle with a closed fist. If the engine kicks back; bad things could happen to your hand and arm. When the engine starts the handle should back out of the crank pulley and not spin with the engine. This is all covered in your operators manual.
