My first thought is timing and close second is condition of points, condenser and coil. A really close third is lack of fuel (backfire is a strong indication of lean condition).

I was thinking timing also.. I have a new set of points to install. Also I need a new gas tank, if anyone has any leads.

What model distributor do you have,an early Remy-374A,or a late model Delco-Remy 635B?
If it's the Remy distributor perhaps the cam has come loose on the tapered shaft or the small pin that's in one corner of the cam has broken and let the rotor button spin around?

Pull spark plug on #1 cylinder and determine TDC on firing stroke. Make sure that both valves are closed. You can use a wire or screwdriver as a probe to the top of the piston. Take off distributor cap, retard the spark and see if the points are just at the point of opening. The rotor should be pointing to the #1 spark plug wire position. If not adjust so they are. You can fine tune the adjustment after the engine is running.
