I use a stiff bent angle putty knife. I have the accessory disc behind the hub cap and they bend easily.
They also make some plastic trim removal tools that may work.

I had the same concern.

I bought a 5 piece "Auto and Molding Tool Set", 5 stout plastic tools, from Harbor Freight for around $9.00.

Specific tools are a wide edge remover, a narrow edge remover, a pull type remover, a handle remover and an upholstery clip remover.

Works fine for hubcaps and trim rings for me, but I don't pull hubcaps every day.

**** Your results may vary ***** is my disclaimer.

Item # 67021. Look at it at Harbor site.

I use the same plastic tools from Harbor Freight. I do have to do some tapping on the end of the tool with a hammer though
