I have my issued NORTH CAROLINA title, in my possession, for my 1951 Chevrolet, Styleline Deluxe, 2 door sedan.
I bought this car from the estate of my late friend, in NEW MEXICO.
The NEW MEXICO TITLE matched the serial number on the "A" pillar plate.
NORTH CAROLINA State Troopers have now called today, have told me, upon reviewing my paperwork, and the picture of my serial number taken by the State Trooper months ago, that my serial number plate is not attached correctly to my "A" pillar.
My serial number plate is attached to my "A" pillar, with RIVETS, EXACTLY as shown in the 1949 to 1953 GM Chevrolet Service Manual.
The North Carolina State Trooper has stated my serial number plate, for my 1951 Chevy, should be attached with WELDS.
I have told the trooper that his information is incorrect. I recall other model years having serial number plates attached via welds, but do not recall the years.
Is there any documentation out there, besides the GM SERVICE MANUAL, that displays or tells of the correct "attaching procedure" for my 1951 Chevrolet serial number ?
The N.C. State Trooper is returning to my home tomorrow, 12-7-2016, for further inspection.
Any positively accurate information will be appreciated.
Thanks, Bob. 12-6-2016.

Thank you.
Is there a year or years that the serial number tag was attached to the "A" pillar with welds ?

My 51 Bel Air also has the plate attached with rivets.

'55 and '57 serial number plates were welded on the A pillar. Don't know when that started. If I had to guess I would say in 1955. My '51 has the serial number plate riveted to the A pillar just like the others.

The 1955-1957 were welded except for one or two plants riveted them on. Just ran across the info. the other day.

The plate on my 50 is also attached with clutch head screws. The plate on my 48 is attached with slotted head screws.

Gene, Good information. Do you remember which plants? I don't recall ever seeing a tri-5 with riveted serial number plate. I have owned a bunch over the years but only three at present. Need to look at the plastic bodied '56 as I don't remember how that plate is attached. I am sure Mike would know.
If this topic expands I think it needs a different thread.

It is my "understanding" that '49 and '50 had the clutch head screws, while '51 and '52 had the rivets. The spot weld began in "53, as I "understand". A murky area for actual facts.

Cautiously optimistic ! Officer made his visit, we had a pleasant conversation. I showed him the rivets on my other '51 Chevy serial number tag, he snapped a pic of it. I copied a picture for him, from my '49 to '53 Chevy Manual, showing the serial number tag location, with its rivets. I highlighted this thread for him, as well, showing the comments from those who stated their '51 Chevys had the rivet attachment. Thank you for your replies ! Officer will submit my info to his headquarters in Raleigh. His source for serial number plate locations and how they are attached is NICB, National Insurance Crime Bureau. We wished one another Merry Christmas, hope this chapter is finished. Thanking you collectively for your assistance !

N.C. must really be on top of their game. A member of our car club just recently had their father's (now deceased) Harley Davidson Trike returned from there. It was stolen in 1979 and somehow wound up at a HD dealer in N.C. The dealer did a 1000 point restoration on the bike and sold it. When the new owner attempted to register it -BAM- it was impounded and sent back here. Hope you have a happy ending too...

WOW, what a story. The NC DMV inspector shared some stories, like yours, with me today. We read a lot of posts, regarding those who buy vehicles, without verifying VIN numbers to the title, or buying vehicles without VINS. Big problems no one needs or wants.

Yeah, you'd think a dealer would know better but their only human. Too bad it wasn't an early knuckle - it was 1972 police model (of all things). It's been about a year and he's still afraid to drive it so trailers it most places.
