I had the transmission rebuilt for my 47 recently and put a new clutch kit in it { old one was ok but decided to go new anyway}. but when we were done and wanted to try it out we cannot get it to go into gear when started. We put everything back as before. It has the vacuum shift and thought maybe I did something with that wrong. if the vacuum piston for it is forward instead of back would that cause the issue? We also adjusted the clutch for play and that did nothing either. Any advise is appreciated.

You may have the disc in backwards. That would cause your problem!

Have you resolved your problem? If the clutch disc is put on backwards, the clutch will not dis-engage.

I have not worked on it again yet as I have been so busy with work. But I don't thinkit could be in backwards as the clutch bolts would not bolt up properly to the pressure plate. Maybe Sunday. been working 12-14 hour days to play catch up on work. Will let you know.

If the disc was in backwards it would be impossible to drive the car. The disc may be too thick. Was it a rebuilt?

I have seem the disc put in backwards. He thinks i mean the pressure plate also. He said (when running he cannot get it in gear. I still think the disc is in the wrong way! He never said the car drove.

Correct. If the disc is in backwards the center part of the disc will catch on the pressure plate and the two will be locked together. I couldn't remember if he said he actually drove the car. Sounds like it could be trans, R&R time.

I doubt the disc is in backwards. When installing the pressure plate it wouldn't seem right somehow. Anyway, I think it is in the linkage. I would fack up a rear whell and see if I could get it in gear by simply moving the arm coming out of the transmission with the engine even running. Process of elimination come in here. All the discs I've seen are marked/labeled/stamped to indicate the pressure plate side. Accordingly, I suppose they could be put in backwards if one really tries. He hasn't said whether he experiences any gear clash or not. Charlie

Have not drove car either. It is on my lift. Can a person tell if disc is in wrong if you take inspection plate off? Also if vacuum advance piston is froward now would that do it? I assume it needs to be in the back position. I'm thinking it is linkage. Waiting on my mechanic friend to come over as he is more knowledgeable than me.

We worked on trying to figure the problem out the other night. My good friend whom helped me remove it and install it checked to make sure the clutch is in correct and says it is. We cannot drive it as when the wheels are on the ground there is no way to get into gear. If I lift it up { it is on my lift} and start it then I can get it into gear but with difficulty and grinding. it seems like the output shaft is not stopping when running and the clutch is pressed in. Tranny was rebuilt and is it possible the out put shaft is messed up? And when we did get it into gear there seemed to be a noise coming from the transmission. Never had this troubleA before so I am stumped.Any more ideas will be appreciated. hate to take it out again when not sure what the issue could be.

Only non-vacuum shift issue that comes to mind is maybe the forks where out of position when the side cover was installed.

i HAD THE FELLA COME OVE RTHAT REBUILT THE TRANNY AND HE FOUND THE ISSUE RIGHT AWAY. The new pressure plate is bad. The fingers are not even all the way around and not letting it release properly. Hope to take it apart this weekend. Will let all of you know how it goes. Appreciate all the help and ideas.

Hi rich, good to hear that someone was able to assist there, hopefully after a new pressure plate your 47 will be good to go.
Cheers,
Dave
