Is there a difference between 216 and 235 rocker arm shafts? My Master Parts Catalog shows different numbers for each motor, but it also calls them an assembly.

The rocker shafts were ALMOST the same from 1941 thru 1962 - 216 or 235 engine.The 1941 thru 1949 shafts were the same.The in 1950 they added a little "flat area" on the bottom of the shaft for hydralic lifter 235's.This was for better lubrication due to the fact the the Hyd. lifters held a constant pressure on the bottom of the shaft.This shaft soon replaced the "round" shafts used in the previous years.So a 1953 "flat" shaft could be used in a 1941.Another change came along in 1954.The sholdered hold down bolts were replaced the non-shouldered bolts.The rocker shaft then had a smaller bolt hole.This shaft eventually replaced the previous shafts back to 1941 BUT the use of non-shouldered bolts was required.To make a long story short a 1954-62 shaft can be used from 1941 and up providing the correct bolts are used.
As per 1962 parts book "3836138 shaft when used on models priot to 1954 require the use of four 455476 bolts and two 3835569 studs"
As a side note - there is no reason that the bolt holes could not be enlarged to pre 1954 size and the old shouldered bolts used.The reason the the holes size was reduced was to prevent breaking the shafts at this point due to the increased valve spring pressure used in 1954 and up (due to higher lift camshaft).
The part number was changed a few times from 1941 to 1954.

The assembly refered to in the book refers to the shafts, arms, stands and bolts and springs.The assemblies are in group 0.352 and the "bare" shafts" follow in group 0.353.The arms fit 1941-53 216, 1950-53 235 used another.The 1954-58 arms were the same and the oil grove relocated in 1959 so the 1959-62 arms the same.
The 1954-58 arms (which were stronger) can be used on the 1950-53 235.

Enough confusion?

Just went out and looked at my shafts. They do not have flat spots. Will they work on my 1953-235 solid lifter engine? I do have he correct rockers. Are they stamped with a part number?

They will work fine on your engine.The rocker arms will have a raised casting or ID number.The shafts are not "numbered".
