Hi, new member here. Just bought a 41 coupe. I noticed the oil pressure gauge only goes up 30 lbs.I once had a 47 Plymouth, and the oil pressure gauge went up to 45 lbs. Why the difference? Is it because the chevvy has an overhead valve set-up? Curious, Ed

The Plymouth had full pressure oiling to the main bearings and to the rod bearings. The crankshaft was drilled to get the oil to the rod bearings thus more pressure was necessary.
The Chevrolet engine has full pressure to the main bearings only and the rods are lubricated by dippers on the rods that dip into a trough under each rod. The troughs are filled with oil under low pressure, like only a couple of pounds.
Your normal oil pressure with hot 10W-30 oil will be around 15 pounds at highway speeds and 5 pounds at idle. It may go up to 30 ponds briefly when cold.

A 216 will run about 15 PSI hot at speed and <5 at idle.

Thanks, guys, for that info. So, do you think the Chevvy set-up is better than the Plymouth? Ed

Just for my info.
I have a 49-3100 with a 55-235 engine.
What should be my oil pressure at idle and at 50 mph with a hot engine and 10-30 oil.
Thanks
Doug

With hot oil at least 35 pounds at 50 MPH nad 10 pounds at idle.
10W-30 is what I would recommend.

The oil pressure reading on any particular engine may vary slightly depending on the thermostat opening degree when the engine is at stable temperture. (I didn't put that just right but I think you and anyone else will know what I mean.

True, and from my experiance it can take at least 1/2 hour of highway driving to completely heat up the oil to full temp.
