I did this last winter. I had my tank reconditioned and I sent my sender away to the John Wolf Co. I was very pleased with the restored sender. It is 30 ohms with a full tank and zero ohms on empty, if I remember correctly. I installed a ground wire on one of the attaching screws and connected it to the frame. My gauge now works perfectly.

Sorry for the late reply, but I find it hard to beat the price of buying a new gas tank verses having yours reconditioned. If you have not checked ebay or Chevs of the 40"s for prices you should. The ebay price includes free shipping an includes a new sending unit ($247.99). Make sure the sending unit is wired for your voltage. You may want to replace the straps and the tank strap cushions which are also available from Chevs of the 40'S.
Good luck, Mike
P.S. I would also replace the bolts, and gas lines if they are original and show corrosion.

I struggled with this decision last year. Chevs of the 40s do sell new tanks. The photo of the tank shows a slightly different bend and position to the neck. My tank was very difficult to remove because of the neck so I didn't want that problem to be any worse. The tech people that I talked to were confused on some of the details of the tank. They sell two versions. One is close to the originals except that the gas line connector is larger. The other tank is larger and really meant for hotrod builders. It has a sender combined with the fuel line connector at the top of the tank.
They have a universal sender that they sell. If you go on Chevy Talk you can find a number of postings by people who had trouble with that device.
