I have had to take the distributor off a few times for different reasons.
When I put it back on, I usually do not get it back in the same position as it was, so I have to change the postion of the spark plug wires.
Is there a "correct way" to install the distributor? In which position should the rotor be when it fires at cyl 1?

Generally the No. 1 spark plug wire is located at the terminal above the locating tab on the distributor cap or above the depression in the edge of the distributor body. Doesn't really matter much if the rotor aligns with the terminal when points open.
