My 1950 4 door with 216 has an AC 9803 combination fuel and vacuum pump that I bought new 29 years ago. It has always seeped a little oil, but now at speeds above an idle it sprays oil onto the inner fender sheet metal! From earlier postings I get the idea that replacing it with a new unit is the only certain cure because of known issues with the pivot pin and the casting. This unit seems to be available only under the Airtex and Carquest brands. What do you think?

If the pivot pin has workout on one side it will hit the bolt and stop, may be able to tap it back in and stake it and use some sealer on the ends. If it is leaking out of the hole on the side the seal that keeps the oil off the diaphragm is bad and like gene said it will need replaced.

It is spraying out of the rectangular opening at the top of the side away from the block, nearest the inner fender, where the manual indicates the vacuum air intake filter is, so I will take ChevyGene's advice and replace the whole unit with a new one.

Hi Chevy50jim As I rebuild old fuel pumps, what happened with your fuel pump is the oil seal for the vacuum side diaphragm pull rod probably tore up allowing oil to be sucked in when the diaphragm relaxes then pushing it out the vent (square hole in the side). I can rebuild your old pump for $135.00 as this is what I charge for a dual diaphragm pump. You can probably get a new aftermarket one cheaper.

You might try Doyle Stokes 478-922-3605 I got my single action 51 pump from him a couple of years ago.

Found another new one on ebay for $35, so ordered it with a 1 year warranty. Other suppliers had them for $60 to $100 but were out of stock.

After a 20 mile test drive, the new pump is pumping out oil too! Glad I bought the eBay 1 year warranty.

Seems to me, if I remember right, oil flying out of the fuel pump vent hole is a symptom of another problem. The vent hole in the pump is there to help the pump diaphram move smoothly. This vent is also a direct passage to the crankcase. If you have cylinder blow-by that can be caused from piston rings being poor or a damaged piston you get a buildup of crankcase pressure and one of the places this pressure come out is the fuel pump vent hole. This pressure carries a lot of oil with it. When the engine s fully warmed up take a close look at couple other chankcase outlets to see if there is excessive pressure comming out when you add some RPMs. A couple good places to check it is the rocker cover oil filler/ vent opening and also the road draft tube below the engine. Also check the oil filler cap to see if the screen in it is clogged as that will also cause that dreaded excess crankcase pressure..... Thinking here. That road draft tupecan also become cloged but it is rare but if it does clog and the oil filler cap on the rocker cover also is cloged the oil will fly out of the fuel pump vent
