i could not check my voltage on my battery while running with a digital meter as the readings were erratic no matter where i tested the voltage on different parts of the car. i brought a analogue meter when car is running and is showing 10 amps at gauge the battery is showing 6.8 volts not 7 volts or over.the battery is one year old and generator is third brush with cutout.before i took it out the battery showed 6.3 volts after 20 minute drive it read 6.7 is this normal charging or do i have to adjust some thing.

Sounds normal to me all things considered.

The rated voltage is 2V/cell (6V). The end-of-charge voltage is 2.4V/cell (7.2V). The float charge is 2.25-2.3V/cell (6.75-6.9V). A full charged 6V battery can´t hold more then 6.8-6.9V. So its ok. Tino

What is the voltage output on the generator? I agree with the others....your battery voltage sounds find to me as well.

The shop manual says maximum charging rate 7.6 or 7.7 , depending on which generator you have.

The volts pushing into the battery must be more than 6 in order for it to go into the battery. Below 6 volts and it will not be able to overcome the battery in order to charge it. Adjusting the third brush will increase or decrease the generator's output. This can be observed on the gauge on the dash inside the car. The correct setting as taught by my Grandfather is slightly less than center on the gauge. His reasoning was not to make the generator work to hard and burn out and not to over charge the battery to fast. He would set it slightly higher if he was going to do a lot of night driving as it used more to drive at night. Right or wrong was not a question it was getting the most out of your car for the money.

I have a 32 chevy not sure what I need to do here. I put a new cut-out on the generator do I have to short it out to set it?? Touch both terminals and get a spark? Not sure what to do if anything. Thanks Chevyjohn

If all you did was replace the cut-out then you don't have to polarize the generator. You may have to set the gap in the cut-out however. If all works as it is then you are good to go.
If in doubt doesn't hurt to polarize the generator. Easy and quick to do with a short jumper wire.
