last question for tonight, many more will certainly follow.....our gas gauge sending unit does not work- I drilled out the rivets, took it apart and can see that the rheostat strip rivet has come loose at one end.
Are these babies rebuildable? the Filling Station catalog only has generic sending units, I would much prefer to have a working original.
any recommendations?

Before you go sending it off.... make sure the gas tank is grounded to the car and the gas gauge is grounded to the dash. Loss of grounding on either parts will cause it not to "read". Nice paint may keep you from the "return" ground to battery. (make sure holes in unit make ground to tank, too.)

I sent my gas guage tank unit out to John Wolf because he is
local; about 10 miles from my home. He creates a modern guage
that looks original but works much better! Turn around time for mine was about two says! The guage can be checked easily
with a digital ohmmeter. I think it operates on 30 Ohms, the
reading should change smoothly as the float is raised and lowered. A quick test is, disconnect the wire from the sending
unit and turn on the ign key; the dash guage should go to 'full'. Next, ground the signal wire and the guage should gp to empty. That will tell you the dash guage and wire to it are good, and the problem must be in the tank unit!

Is the outside of the gas tank grounded through the straps to the car frame?

In most cases the tank straps are a questionable electrical contact. It may be better to put another wire from a sender mounting screw to a good clean chassis point rather than relying on the straps.

today I soldered the loose rheostat strip and it now shows continuity between the sending unit body and the wire connection.

as I move the float lever the digital ohm meter moves from 79 to 101.

does this mean I have fixed it?

Worth a try. Good luck.
