I have located 2 good 4 cylinder heads and need help with their date codes.

The first head has a date code of D 19 6 - am I correct that this is an April 1926 head?

The second has a date code of 10 2616 ; there is a raised "screw head" impression between the 10 and 2616 an another "screw head" impression at the end after the 6. What does this represent?

Dave

I think the screw heads are casting plugs.

My question was not about the "screw head" impressions but about interpreting the date code on the second head.

I just found out that the 10 2616 coded head is a 1916 head with a 407-5 casting number. If anyone is looking for a good 1916 head please PM me.

Dave - I wondered if that was maybe the case. However, a Head cast in late October of 1916 would be for a 1917 Four-Ninety, as the model year changeover was in August. About a month lag between casting date and assembly, so it would have gone onto a car built in late Nov or early Dec of '16, well into the 1917 model year. Of course, someone could also use it on a '16, or an '18.

(The Head was cast 100 years ago on this past Wednesday!)
