The 261 truck engines used a very "wide" valve clearance. This was because the engine was used in very large trunks and miles of heavy pulling would shorten valve life.
The same camshaft was used in 1956-1958 235 truck engines and their setting was recommended to .013"-.016" for the exhausts and .006 -.008" for the intakes for light duty service.
By the way, did the '37 hub caps work on the later wheels?

Gene, Didn't some 261 engines come with Hydrolic valve engines. (I realize that in the instant case you were speaking about solid lifters engines.) Charlie

All US 261 engines, which were used in just trucks, had solid lifters. In Canada the small Chevrolet based Pontiac had a 261 engines with hydraulic lifters. The 1959-1962 US 261 could easily be converted to hydraulics by just installing a Hyd. lifter camshaft.
