If you haven’t been able to tell from my other questions I’m getting my Chevy ready for the summer and am trying to sort out a few small problems first. I am having an issue with my vacuum powered wipers on my 54 Bel air. The dang things just don’t work. They will move a little bit but stop and very slowly move across the windshield. They return much faster but they are pretty much useless. What could be wrong? I have a spare transmission and switch from my parts car. Any suggestions? The hose to the carb looks good.

The vacuum wiper motor needs lubrication I have done the following with good results.
Remove the hose from the manifold fitting.Place end of hose into small container of aotumatic transmission fluid.Move wiper back and forth by hand. This will draw the fluid into the motor.Let stand overnight so the fluid softens the old hardened grease in the motor.Slip hose back onto the fitting and give the wipers a try.If ths dosen't work the cover can be removed from the motor and the paddle inside the motor cleaned and regreased.Just make a note as to how the parts are assembled.

To add to the Chev masters comments on lubricating. I followed the procedure on the 52, at slow speed they used to chatter and drag across the windshield they are now nice and smooth. A dual diaphram fuel pump or a vacumn tank will help with stalling when stepping on the gas.
