I'm back working on my basket case 38 chevy. I found the ignition switch with keys and was going to install it in the dash figuring it was self explanatory. What actually holds it in the dash? I see nothing on the dash that would hold it. Any pictures? Sorry for a simple question, but I did not remove it. Thanks!

If it's the stock switch it'll be at the end of the electrolock (armored cable) with the coil cap at the other end. The chrome lock cylinder simply sticks through the dash and two screws hold it in place from the back.

Coil end of the electrolock. Disregard the arrow in the photo.

Key end.

Yep, that's what it looks like and I assumed it just screwed into the dash with that flange. Unfortunately there is nothing on the back side of the dash to screw it to, hence the confusion. Thanks!

You are probably missing the bracket that mounts to the dashboard. Here are pictures of the 1938 bracket.

Hope you can find this bracket in your loose pieces - let me know if you still need one.

I think the 1939 bracket is the same but not sure. The 1937 bracket is similar and will work but it does not have the light socket on top.

The holes on the sides of the switch bracket are for the throttle and choke cables and the cable retainer nuts secure the bracket to the dash. Tom

I have such a bracket in my stash of parts, which I'll probably never use - if you can't find yours, let me know.

Just went through my boxes looking for a different part, and found the bracket. Of course. Thanks to all that helped.
