Dale, I knew you were on the road when this thread start. Seems you made it back OK! The '48 preformed well?

I was fairly certain we would hear something from you on this matter. At least I was hoping.

Hey Dick, what's your thoughts on the '47's.

My 4dr Fleetline, which I have had since 1969, had been undercoated. I did not do as Dale and scrape it all off.
My 47 Aero's underside had been recently painted black before I acquired it in 2008. I can be not help on this subject. Surely someone out there has a 47/48 whose underside is still original !!

I suspect after 60 +/- years they all will be pretty much black. Oil, grease, road tar, and etc.. Will take some forensic work to undercover the truth.

Mine, along with all the ones I have crawled under to take pictures of were all undercoated with a THICK layer of tarry stuff. Where the tar missed was rust. sick

One place to look that is in better shape is the toe board area below the firewall.

Ok, lets go back to 48wood's original question, whick he had also ask back in December of 2013, where is the break-point for body color? At A or at B. in the photo? [Linked Image from pic100.picturetrail.com] Used a pic from Johnny's site. Thanks Johnny!

On my '40 A was the break point for the gray. The "A" pillars (where the horn relay is mounted)and the cowl, including under the fenders, were body color. I have no idea if this extends to later years. Needless to say, I thought somebody had painted the floor panels the wrong color and repainted them black. This was way before I had the slightest clue about how to restore anything. I was just a farm boy trying to clean things up.

My '39 was at "A" also. May have had some overspray from above but after many years that is hard to determine.
Could also vary depending on the person with the spray gun.

You all seem to have a foot nailed to the floor and going in circles. The best I can determine on the bottom paint and the departure point from the firewall is that no one really knows.

Maybe this issue should be dropped from judging and any color or departure point accepted. How is the question to be answered positively once and for all? Even Gene doesn't seem to have a firm hold on the facts concerning this one.

This thread does have merit in that gives the 47/48ers some thing to talk about. Can you just see them around the cracker barrel, with a Benjamin Franklin roasting their feet, eating some good Owen's Brothers peanuts and sipping something sudsy and trying to settel this delimma? You may would get a better suck if you ask them how long it takes our planet to circle the sun or why there is a leap year every four years but not every hunded when divided into the year with no remainder but is every four hundred years with no remainder. (That last rule - of the three - is why the year 2000 was a leap year. It has to do with fine tuning (adjusting) the time needed for the earthto circle the sun.)

Sorry, I got off the sugject up there.

Anyway, I;m glad the thread has given the 47/48ers something to chew on. talk Agrin

Note I mentioned that all Fisher Body Plants may not have used the same color.
