I have a 54 BelAir.I know that a 235 with no oil filter takes 5 qts. of oil and one with a filter takes 6 qts. When you check the dip stick on a 235 without a filter the level will read to the full line on the stick. On a 235 with a filter will the level be above the full line because of the extra qt.of oil or do they use different dip sticks?

According to the Chevrolet parts book, one dipstick is used.

The "extra" oil is not in the crankcase, it is in the oil filter case and hoses, thus the oil level in the crankcase is the same and the same dipstick is used.

Or you could say the oil filter adds 1 Qt. to the capacity because the filter is always full of oil. If you were to change the oil and not change or empty the filter only 5 Qts. would bring it up to the full mark.
The original instructions was to change the oil every 1000 to 3000 miles, depending on driving conditions, and change the oil filter every 6000 miles.
