The vertical adjustment for the headlight on the 38 Master uses a #12x24 bolt or screw about 3 1/2"long. The screw protrudes through a hole in the rear of the bucket. The hole serves as a guide for the screw. There is a tiny hole near the end of the screw that has a cotter pin through it. The cotter pin is there to stop the screw from backing out of the hole into the housing. As probably many have discovered, the screw eventually breaks off at the cotter pin hole and the screw then slips in to the housing. This negates any possibility of adjusting the vertical aim of the headlight.

I am wondering what methods have been used to repair this problem. The dimensions of the screw seem to make it a difficult item to source. In addition it is desirable to not have any thread up near the head as this would interfere with the intended operation.

I've never seen anyone with a replacement for sale. You might have to bite the bullet and have one made by a machinist.

Tiny,
yes I am actually thinking of buy some threaded rod and making a head out of a nut. McMaster-Carr lists the rod and bolt that go to 3" not 3 1/2".

Looks like a 1938 bucket on eBay complete with the adjusting screw.

Thanks,
I have an extra pair of buckets but I am going to repair my own. It is interesting that the item is described as 37/38 and of course that is wrong. There is no way it would fit a 37. I looked at the vendor rating and it is 100%. That rating is hard to maintain so you would think they would know what they are selling.
