My parts book dtd Aug 32 says there is a shim under the rear crossmember cover (gas tank apron?). Any one know what size or type material? Also location of the shim? All assistance appreciated.

First thing you need to ask yourself is WHY is a shim needed.

An examination of the gas tank cover too the rear frame cross member with the panel not sitting PERFECTLY flat , against all the mating surfaces, would be the primary reason for a shim.

Basically if your trying to snug the panel down you want it to be resting flat, otherwise your going to bend or distort the panel . Just common sense

The (shim ) is used to provide a buffer between the gas tank cover and the frame. There is also a strip of material on the top of the gas tank . Probably for an anti squeek and to prevent metal to metal contact . The stuff I removed looked like heavy roofing material .
On the sides of the cover there are two spots where the rear fenders bolt to the gas tank cover . The fender welting is sandwiched in between on both sides . Hope this helps .

I'm aware of the purpose and reason of a shim, didn't know material and location. Thanks

Jack, what size fender welt did you use? Mine had no welt at all ( except the remains in some areas between the metal). Any ideas as to the size of the shim? Thanks again for your input.
