I never heard where there was anything wrong with it and was used on other GM cars. I would guess that they decided the one terminal was not necessary in 1939 and eleminated the extra wire in the harness. The three terminal worked OK in the 1938 and discontinuing the four terminal regulator eleminated one item in Delco's production.

The ignition terminal was eleminated.

Thanks Gene...I've been under the impression it had a design flaw...this clears that up! Billu38

A design flaw in a Chevrolet... please...I never heard of such a thing.

The forth wire went to the ignition switch and cut the power to the regulator when the switch was in the off position so as not to drain the battery. This feature was "built-in" to the three wire regulator.

I have several old regulators that I have acquired over the years. Is there any way to test them to see if they are good? Is there anyone who rebuilds them if they are bad?

I would guess finding a place that rebuilds regulators would be very difficult.
To make matters worse the original 1938 regulator was only made for 2 years.
