Can just the punkin be change on a 38 MD or complete rear axle ? where to find a 3:78 ? what years interchange ? sc

There is no "pumpkin" in that style differential. What you need is the torque tube (enclosed drive shaft) and the "pumpkin" as they are attached. This reqires spliting the U joint behind the transmission and unbolting the "pumpkin" at the front of the banjo housing. Also removing the rear cover and unlocking the axle shafts is necessary as is a shop manual.
You will need the pumpkin and torque tube from a 1937-1939 Master model which is the lower priced series with a solid front axle and leaf springs. It will be a 3.73 ratio which is a big improvement.

Also, when you locate a Master rear axle (3.73), make sure to get the speedometer drive gear for it. Check out any local hot rod shops - they may be taking the drive train out of a '37-'39 to make a hot rod and will usually sell parts fairly cheap.
