So I am putting together a depression type RP. The transmission I have is a rebuilt 33 with the beveled cut pilot shaft gear. In talking with another member from our region today he said when driving his 36 he still has to double clutch from 1st to 2nd, and from 2nd to 3rd. That should be the same transmission that I have. My question is are the synchronizers that weak or is his trans that worn out? I also have a rebuilt 3 speed out of a 41 pickup I could use. He has a real small 3 speed out of a 36 standard that should work nicely with my 4 cylinder. He is thinking that the first REAL synchronizers came in 37 with the big re-design. He does not think that the 36 standard has synchronizers in 2nd and 3rd either. Opinions?

The first syncromesh transmission was in 1932. It was used from 1933-1936 In the Master models. The 1933-1936 Standards did not have syncromesh.

Thanks Gene, I guess I didn't say it in the post but I knew the 32 was the first year in the Chevs, and had straight cut spur gears on the pilot shaft. Buick started using it in 31, and Cadillac was somewhat earlier. So other than my 29 I have only driven a 33 once. As I remember, it shifted fine. Thanks for the info that the standard was not synchronized in 2nd and 3rd. That makes that part of the decision easier. The freewheeler on the 33 unbolted easily and the tail shaft ball housing went right back in its place. I already had the little bracket that holds the bottom idler shaft in place to turn it into a truck transmission. I was just wondering what peoples opinions are as to which transmission might be better, the 33 or the 41. They both have their benefits.

It would take extensive modifications to install a much improved 1941 transmission.

My 36 Standard must double clutch. I have great gears. It shifts into gear real nice and with a "clunk" tight fit. But if you forget and try fast shift all you get is grinding!
