How does one remove the saw tooth fastener that holds the padding on the fire wall or does one just brake it. Al

Squeeze the prone legs together from the engine side and push them towards the inside of the car.
The Filling station sells new ones if they brake FYI

tried that and all that happens was they spin around using pliers. Al

Have you tried using vice grips with the prongs clamped?

If you use the pliers sideways the grooves will hold the "legs" so the fasteners can be squeezed. Another way is to find a piece if metal tubing the same ID as the hole and push the tubing over the fastener "legs" to compress them.

How about taking a few pictures and writing a short description of what you did and sending it to the G&D Editor. I am sure many other VCCA members would appreciate knowing about removing those fasteners.
