a 29 International transmission hangs in third after stopping at a light. With great effort, rolling backward for just an inch helps get into neutral.

Yes, clutch is releasing. I am the computer guy in our family, my brother Russ, a tool and die maker, rebuilt the from the ground up. He asked me to sign up and chat for a solution. I hope he told me enough so I can answer any questions.

If there is old oil on the clutch it can stick the disc to flywheel or pressure plate.

Rolling back a short distance will take the pressure off the gears. Most often the problem is due to the clutch plate not being completely disengaged from the flywheel/pressure plate. The other is the shift mechanism trying to operate two gears at the same time. If you are sure about clutch release then check the shift level end and other tower parts for wear. We had to add a little metal to a worn '27 shift lever that occasionally stuck between gears. Many years ago a college buddy had a '52 Olds with Pontiac transmission that we had to push backwards to free the transmission at traffic lights and stop signs. It was a hoot to see the look on peoples faces when one of us jumped out, pushed on the right front fender and then jumped back in before driving down Route 66.

How Sweet the roar of a Chevy four!
