Hi Guys,
Took the 1931 roadster out for a Sunday drive, drove about 8 km at low speed in first and second gear cruising along. Everything was great and she prrrr like a kitten when she suddenly made a backfire sound and the engin died. Tried to start her to no avail. After about an hour I pulled started her with another car, started right up. Drove her about 1km and she did the same, backfiered and died.
Pull started again but this time she did not want to start.
Got home and the Coil felt warm almost to hot to touch. She had enough fuel.
What can it be guys, where to start fault finding.

I think you have already identified the problem. Replace the coil and the condenser. Check the timing for too far advanced.

I have had a problem several times with a modern replacement coil overheating and internally shorting. After I pour water on it to cool it down it starts and runs well until low rpm and load cause it to overheat. Think these coils are made in either Mexico or China.
How Sweet the roar of a Chevy four!
