Test drove a 61K mile original 1953 Bel Air w/ PG. Not familiar enough with PG to know if the "slip" I feel is normal. Seems to be a dog around town, at stoplights, and on hills at low speed. Shifts to 2nd gear at about 30-35 mpg. At the high end (50+) seems to be fine. At low speed, it doesn't seem to matter how hard I step on the accelerator in order to pick up speed (ie., steppin hard on the gas doesn't necessarily mean I pick up speed much faster), and the engine seems to really rev up as she tries to pick up speed. Anyone familiar with '53 PG, please give me your thoughts. In a worst case scenario and it is slipping more than normal, what am I looking at in terms of adjustments/service?

The Power Glide behind a 235 engine was not a "dog" in the city.The 1950-52 was if left in drive range as it had no automatic low.Felt much better if lever was placed in LOW and shifted to drive from between 15-30 MPH.The 1953 and up to 1962 automaticly started in low and up-shifted to drive betweem 15 and 40 MPH-depending on accelerator position.There should be no slipping or racing of the engine sensation.
In your question you mentioned that it stays in low up to 30-35 MPH and this should only be true if the pedal was down to the detent position (about 3/4)On,light throttle should shift in the 20 MPH range.The early 1953 PG , at full throttle, up shifted at about 47 MPH-later were revised to shift a 42 MPH and would down shift to low below 37 MPH if floored.
The shift points are adjustable (easily) by the rod to the transmission and the carburetor linkage.No one ever complained about the performance of the 1953 and up.Sould take off from a start well and from 25 MPH and up would be about the same feel in low as a standard shift car in 2nd gear.In dive shold also pick-up well with only a slight slip feel.
If it slips abnormaly in drive after it up-shifts it could have bad clutch plates which would require an overhaul.The fluid would usually look brown and smell burnt if this were the case
