The slow cranking speed might be due to the battery cables.

These old 6 volters need really thick battery cables to carry the current. 12v cables are too small.

You can use welding cable, buy some from your favorite car parts place, or buy a set from one of the old Chevy parts suppliers.

Cheers, Dean

Make sure you are using 00 gage wire or larger and the grounding points are clean.

The points should have a gap of .030" when sitting on the high point of the cam lobe.

thanks you for the links, i have read the 23 manual and followed it to the letter, i cleaned the terminals to the foot switch and the positive to the starter, as i was sitting there i saw that all diagrams show the ground going to the starter itself, this one is connected to the trans. i need to remove any variation of the diagram so i going to order a longer ground cable. is this a good possibility? thanks.

Attaching the ground cable directly to the starter will give the best ground to the starter. As long as the engine with starter attached is directly bolted to the frame then the other electrical gadgets should work as well.

FYI, I put a star lock washer under most of my electrical connections (including the ground cable) to get a good 'bite' and make a good path for the electrons to flow freely.

Greetings Dean, Was nice to see you, and especially the two cylinder engine. I really appreciate you firing it up just for me. Was a lot of fun to see it run in person.

If I had room for it here at my place you would get your trade. Perhaps one of these days I could drag it home. I just recently purchased a 4-cylinder test engine and all the spare room is gone.

Hey fellas. And ladies if any. I have been working on other projects. Back on this one now. The starter negative smokes and the starter cranks slowly. I opened the cap of the starter and it looked OK. But I may need to tear it down and rebuild. Foot switch is OK. Ignition switch may be old but OK. Do I need another ground to motor or chassis. Thanks. What do you guys do?

*update* i cleaned the heck out of the cable contact points, on the switches as well, i moved the ground from the starter to the engine mount next to battery box. i cleaned the metal under the foot switch and the frame itself. this helped immensely. got it to crank and fire, and i was even able to adjust the carb. i didnt stay running and i wanted to know, whats the base adjustment for the carb? how many turns out is it or works best? do you guys run more grounds from motor to chassis? thanks.
