hello all,
sorry i screwed up the original post...
I am fixing up a 49 styline special, and would like to replace the shocks. Can I get some recommendation for a modern day replacements? As I understand, the front two shocks are stem type on top and bottom, while the rears are stem at top, but eye attached at bottom. Please keep in mind I am looking for shocks that will fall right in with out any alteration as I might not be the biggest mechanically inclined guy out there.
Cost is an issue as well... need to keep it as low as possible.
Thanks for any help, Gene

When I had my '50, I made the mistake of buying heavy duty shocks then Gabriels. Way too stiff. Jarred the fillings out of my teeth.
And about 10 years ago I helped a friend restore another '50 and NAPA had two numbers. A knowledgeable parts guy knew which one was a standard shock and it was cheaper, too...

The Farm and Fleet store shocks are Gabriels but they are the softer gas cushioned shocks. They are listed in a seperate "old car" catalog and called their Classic Line. The better H.D. Gabriels are gas charged and very firm also.I removed the heavy duty Monroes that were on the rear of the '50 and installed the "cheapie" Gabriel classics. The heavy duty front shocks seem to be OK - probably the added weight of the Power Glide helps.JC Whitney also sells the Gabriel Classics but for more money.

One cheap option is what I used here: **** F100 in the back and 66 Galaxie in front. The fronts are made to stand an Y block, so they will be firmer than stock and give you a very interesting handling with the same measurements. In the back take care not to buy the bigger payload models, as they may be too hard.
But the measurements are exact for both ends.
