How does one remove the backing plate from the Dubonnet Knee-Action shock on a '37 MD. I have been unable to find detailed info regarding the removal of the backing plate. Yes, I am gun-shy and thus the call for help. Does someone have a link or source to provide this step by step info. I have the shocks removed from my ’37 and need to get them ready to ship for refurbishing.

First remove all of the various washers, seals and deflectors from the spindle. Then the backing plate will pull right off. The backing plate has a large brass hat type busing that pivots on the spindle as the wheel moves up and down. This bushing is replaceable and should fit fairly tight on the spindle....also requires lubrication. When the bushing is loose it will rattle when going over bumps with the rattle going away when brakes are applied.

Thank you Chev Nut .. Fete Accompli with the removal of the backing plate. While cleaning the plate I realized the radius rod is threaded on both ends. The old grease has been removed. When reinstalling, when I bottom out each end, how many turns should I back off?

As little as necessary. Just enough to prevent the threads from bottoming.

I hope I'm adding my next question in the correct way .... I am in need of the packing for the front wheel bearings, (cork) wheel dust shield ... both inner and outer (2 5/16 I.D.)- these items fall under group 6.326, PNs 376033 & 376309 (these numbers noted in the parts catalog). Is a rubber packing preferred? Is there a source for these items or is this one of those items a person will need to make on his own? I have searched without luck.

The originals were cork. Cork was the high-tech general seal material years ago. I have never seen them reproduced so I would try to find some neoprene O rings. Years back I found sone new ones but the cork was dried-out and brittle.

Jim, if you find a modern replacement for the seal, please let us know where and what size.
If you are interested, I have a drawer full of the O rings the right size for sealing the radius arm joints, I can send you a handful if you haven't found any yet.
