I just bought a 54 chevy wagon, i'm very excited. Wondering if there are any power steering conversion kits for this year/model. My 58 was easy with the 605 gear box. Help! thanks.

Power steering was available for the 1954 line of automobiles. In order to install the accessory on your car it is recommended you purchase a parts car that has a complete unit on it and make the transfer. The unit consists of a special steering column with the slave unit. The pump requires special brackets and bolts. The major component is the dual groove crank pulley. This part is the key to the power steering unit. Depending on the transmission, you must end up with the proper brackets and switch for the NSS and back up lights. Also, you are in for some heavy money to purchase the white Power Steering horn button.

It can be done. I have converted two units.

Do you hink it would be easier to install a IFS Mustang II kit. I bought it w/ a '92 chevy s10 v6 engine and 700r4 tanny. Thanks for the advice.

Whoooaaa, sorry didn't mean to offend. I was just inquiring. I make my cars daily drivers. I'll start looking for orignal power steering parts. Know of any junk yards that can accomodate.

msabin, nothing personal against you or your choices, we are somewhat narrow minded, but friendly , around here about our 1949 to 1954 Chevrolets, and believe the original suspension and driveline is part of the preferred package.

I understand and respect that. Even though I modify for daily driving I keep everything else as orginal as parts allow. Appreciate the help.

Ok, I know I can be excommunicated for that, but I always wanted to ask if the hydraulic cylinder who moves the steering arms in older f***s could be used in the original system, making one original system with assistance.
Please don´t hate me, I´m just curious...

Ok, that did it Mahalet! one lap around the flagpole in a Model T F0RD for you!!! Ha! just kidding, us Chevrolet folks believe in forgiveness and kindness to everyone even those that drive other marques and junky old cars! He! He!

Maybe we should see if Jesse James over at the Monster Garage could come up with that kind of a mod!

I here you, but now we do have some options. When I have my savages(kids) in the car, I want to brake and know the cars going to stop. Not always the case w/drums all around. Someday, hopefully I'll have the resources to have my stock originals w/ matching numbers....at least I'm trying to represent in a semi-demented way.

Good news, I have located an original power steering package for a '54 chevy. Hope I have somewhat redeemed myself.

If you still have the original 235 in your car, be sure your PS package includes the dual pully damper.

And the left motor mount frame bracket,The drag link,The shift rods that run down to the transmission.(one if PG two if stick)The column rods that run up to the shift lever inside car (upper and lower),and the lower lever that attaches to lower shift rod if its a Power Glide.
The left metal air duct is removed and a flexible 4" tube takes its place.Original was black plus the neutral safty switch if its a PG trans.

Ok, sorry, but where I live some cuban ways are unavoidable.
Somebody made in here in the seventies a system just like the 55, with an external cylinder helping, It was a more or less generic kit for the old Aero Willys and pickups made in Brasil.
and I´ve tried to drive a Model T some weeks ago with some little difficulties...
