Why have I, for many, many years seen 2 different size headlight trim rings for the 38 Chevy...One is larger in cross-sectional diameter than the other...Billu38

By "trim ring" are you referring to the part that clamps the lens to the housing?

ALL 1938's had the painted ring with a narrow chrome band...as did 1937's and early 1939 Master Deluxes.
The 1937 and 193 are the same and the 1939 is a different size.

I don't know bt the 1939 lens is 9/16" larger than the 1938.
