The letters cast onto my '54 210 wagon's engine are:

The numbers are only date cast numbers. The block casting number behind the starter will identify the engine size.

The 261 engine will have two little I I cast into the side of the block above the starter.

The I I are two raised marks about an inch tall.

The starter must be removed to see the casting number.\\What makes you think it could be a 261 truck engine?

The party I bought it from said a previous owner had put a crate engine with more cc's.
AND, indeed, there are two II cast above the starter.
I wonder what significant differences the 261 has?
It's a shame it isn't the orginal, but it is a strong engine.

thanks for the help

The 235 cubic inch engine has a bore of 3 9/16' and stroke of 3 15/16"
The 261 cubic inch engine has a bore of 3 3/4" and stroke of 3 15/16".
Due to the large bore there is no water cooling between the cylinders.
The carburetor on a 261 has a slightly larger throat.Other than that they are basicly the same engines.
It there a stamped number on the ledge (facing up)-side of the block behind distributor?.

A list of engine casting numbers can be found at http://home.znet.com/c1937/Cast.htm . The casting number on 54 235 & 261 engines is located in a fold under the fuel pump. Only 1937 Export engines have casting number behind the starter.
I have two 53-54 261 engines. They do NOT have the "Captain Stripes" (II) as the 56 and newer 261s.
If your engine has been replaced, does it have a 55-63 Water Pump? Was the radiator screwed on the wrong side of the brace to avoid the fan?

54Handyman:
What kind of oil filter you have?
Full or partial flow?
How did you mount the engine?
Which gearbox?
