Here is a accident with a freshly restored 1929 Duesenberg. A family of five were in the Duesenberg and three of the family members died in the accident.

Considering it was 48 Chevrolet I was wondering if anyone knew the driver and passengers, or even if they were a member?

They weren't Southern Ontario Region. It looks like a Fleetline, and I don't know any National Members of the VCCA that own '48 Fleetlines. From the pictures it was burned out pretty good, and was hard to tell if it was a street rod or original.

The 407 is a Toll road that skirts around the North of Toronto, about 20 minutes from my place here. I always take it down to the meets south of here because it is less congested and four lanes wide in most spots. Driving the cars, or on the trailer, there is plenty of room for people to get around you while doing 95 to 100km/h and there is rarely any traffic on it during the weekends.

apparently a rear tire blew out at 60 + mph, so they said on the 6 o'clock news today and the car ended up in a ditch.

So sad ! Not only for the loss of lives but the loss of an Aerosedan. Apparently there are not many up in canada since you say you don't know any VCCA member up there with one.

This serves as a strong reminder to keep track of the age of our tires on these old cars.

They spend their lives in storage so often look fantastic even though they may be seriously degraded. Sadly, the longevity is especially questionable with some of the overseas quality these days.

The manufacturers and government are reluctant to define exact dates of "expiry" due to liability. Many safety based organizations recommend replacement at around 6 years of age if full tire history is unknown; to a maximum of 10 years if the history is known and the tire is well taken care of. This is based on the date of manufacture and doesn't matter whether the tire is sitting on the shelf the whole time or driven daily - it's strictly age degradation. BIAS ply in theory should last a bit longer but how much longer, who knows.

This is a pretty short window and easy to exceed with our collector cars. Obviously storage conditions vary so these recommendations likely target the worse case scenario of poor quality tires stored in lousy conditions (UV or ozone exposure) but it's worth keeping track of as time sure does fly...

I think having a "blowout" with a tube type tire can be a lot worse than a tubeless failure. I am wondering if this is what happened. I have also heard it said that a tire failure in the rear is actually worse than having one in the front.

While we may be tempted to jump to conclusions about the cause of the accident and the resulting loss of life, can't we postpone the retoric on safety concerns for a resonable period?

There were three people killed here. Let us not be so quick to let loose warnings about tire maintenance and conditions. We don't know what happened to cause the blowout. It could have been caused from debris in the highway as it could have been the age of the tire(s). There will be plenty for second guessing, finger pointing and soundly based warnings later.

Please.
